So how do you set about Growing a Container Herb Garden?
Look at this lovely container herb garden we made this past weekend. I am so excited to begin to use our own herbs.
We already had the mint and chives (the mint had grown rather rampantly and needed containing) and we bought some very cheap little plug plant herbs from he supermarket to join them, We made some simple stone markers (with a sharpie and clear varnish) and that is it. Ready to go!
It smells all kinds of interesting already.
Herbs do wonderfully well in containers. You have to use good multi-purpose compost, and make sure the containers have good drainage. They also need to be kept well-watered, as they tend to dry out a lot quicker than if the herbs are planted in the ground.

Where we will use our herbs….
Chives are lovely chopped into cottage cheese
I often use Oregano in pasta sauces
I use Fennel like to use parsley in omelettes
I love Mint with new potatoes or made into a mint sauce with mushy peas!
I use Sage sprinkled on top of a slice of cheese pizza
I would use Thyme to sprinkle on veggies before roasting them

I love growing herbs! One top tip – mint does tend to take over, so I’ve always been taught to grow it in a separate pot.
Love your herb garden. I grow mine in lots of different sized pots rather than a big one like this. Love this idea though, especially as it off the ground as we have problem with ants. Did you make the container or buy it??
I love it too, am new to all of this, but find it so satisfying to use own herbs in cooking! Your herb garden looks much tidier than mine, and loving those pebble markers!
Oh I love this! The little stone markers are a brilliant idea Becky – I’m going to get making some of those this weekend, because our herb garden has become a little unruly recently! We’ve got our mint in an old cast iron kettle – fingers crossed that helps contain it a a little! x
What a great idea – and so good listing what you use them all for, there’s so much once you sit down and think about it! And now I am hankering after garlic and thyme roast potatoes!

Your herb naming stones are such a lovely idea.
I like rosemary sprinkled on roasting vegetables, as well as thyme…

What a pretty garden. I quite often plant mint in its original plastic pot into the ground to contain it, so it doesn’t run rampant over everything else. I love your little stone markers, I might have to give them a go on my allotment!

Minty new potatoes are THE BEST! It is lovely to see some life in the garden again isn’t it. I just hope the slugs don’t munch all of ours.

Mint is really good at stopping ants coming in the house, if you put one by the door….useless fact of the day! I too have some herbs, theres something really special about cooking and just whizzing out with the scissors and cutting fresh herbs to put in. I’ve never seen herb plants or seeds here, but I buy the little packets of fresh herbs from the supermarket and plant a few stalks. Some grow, some don’t. Basil is my latest casualty, but I shall persevere.
Your container looks fab
I love the stones in your pot with the names of the herbs, this is lovely. My favorite is chive for the flavour and the little flowers.
A herb garden is too of my list of things to do when we finally move somewhere with a garden! I love basil and rosemary best I think, but love the smell of lemon mint on my fingers, so would have to grow some of that too.
Watch that mint!! It is a real bully.
I too have started growing herbs in pots just outside my back door and ahve tomatoes in a little greenhouse. It makes me smile everytime I see them.
