Today – Investing in Antiques

To my mind being savvy with your money does not mean not ever spending it.

What it means ( in my opinion) is that you make smart, informed and decisive decisions about what you do and don’t spend money on.

I am a great believer in investing money. I don’t mean in stocks and shares (although this can be a smart move). I think investing in property and in art for example can be two great ways of maximising your money that are also hugely exciting. I would absolutely love a property portfolio and an extensive pop art collection.

One day!

When I was a child I used to sometimes go and stay with my Great Aunty who lived in Kent. Her neighbour had an antique shop, a teeny tiny one and oh it excited me so much. It seemed to teem with treasures. I got such a thrill from imagining priceless wonders on the shops shelves just waiting to be discovered. For the same reason I adore the Antiques Roadshow. I especially like the bit where the presenters reveal what the antique is worth and the owners get all emotional and excited. It’s just thrilling and captivating to see!

I guess it’s the treasure hunter in us all.

It’s not just the potential financial win on antiques that gets me excited it is the beauty and the history and essentially the story behind the objects that draws me in too,

Westland London is a specialist in antique fireplaces and fine architectural antiques and their items are stunning.

Look at this beautiful lantern on the iron light bracket. The bracket dates from 1870 and the lantern has been reclaimed from Her Majesty’s Theatre in Carlisle when the building was demolished. Oh the things it will have seen!

What a special piece to own.

And how about this xylophone?

Oh my goodness it is SO beautiful – it dates from 1884 and it is extremely decorative and it comes with it’s own patent. Such an interesting piece and a work of art absolutely!

Antiques are an interesting way to invest your money and will bring so much pleasure in the process – I could browse for HOURS!

Do you like antiques? Do you think it is a good way to invest your money?

I would love to hear your thoughts on this.

    Hello, Becky,
I would like to say that investing in antiques is often as much a gamble as in vesting in the stock market or in property. With any kind of investment, investments can go down as well as up and this also happens in the world of antiques. In recent years the value of ‘brown’ furniture (not the high end furniture, certainly not Chippendale, Sheraton, and so forth – not that that kind of thing comes onto the market very often!) but the kind of furniture that was being snapped up and then painted or altered in some way to suit 21st century tastes. Similarly things such as highly decorative pieces of ceramics (we will forget again high-end priced Meissen and things which are truly rare) have dropped considerably in value when decorators have demanded often bold statement pieces. But in the main, I would tend to agree, that investing in antiques is a good thing – but perhaps investing is the wrong word (it would indicate that somewhere along the line you might recoup the money spent); perhaps buying antiques, the ultimate in re-cycling, rather than buying new – something that has lasted for over 100 years and is still in good condition will surely last another hundred years if looked after carefully.
