The Secret to Spring Cleaning: Steam

Ah, springtime. It provides more than just a welcome dose of sunshine and wildflowers. Now you have the opportunity for new beginnings (and a second bite of the cherry if you fumbled your New Year’s resolution!). If you’re lining up your annual deep clean during this showery season, here’s something worth considering: a steam cleaner.

No place to hide

Not your typical hoover, steam cleaners use piping hot water vapour to grab dirt particles buried deep in your carpets. Most modern steam cleaners are now environmentally-friendly, using only steam (no chemicals) to raise the dirt from your floors. Unlike a regular vacuum cleaner, a steam cleaner not only lifts dirt from the top layer of your carpet, but cleans down to the base of it.

What’s the result? A mighty fine clean, that’s what! If you smoke in your home or own pets, it’s a particularly useful way to eliminate odours. Steam cleaners can also help remove mould and bacteria that may have built-up in your carpet’s fibres.

Is the end of the vacuum cleaner nigh?

Hmmm… tricky one! Steam cleaning is incredibly effective, but can take a bit more time and effort than whipping the hoover around. Depending on the model of steam cleaner you use, you might have to empty the water tank more than once. Many steam cleaners use dry steam and won’t leave your carpet damp, but this also something you’ll need to consider.

It’s worth keeping your standard vacuum cleaner for everyday use. Bring out the big gun, or rather the steam cleaner, just a few times a month for those occasions when you really mean business.

Which steam cleaner should you buy?

The make, model and brand of steam cleaner that works best for you will depend on your circumstances. Ask yourself two questions: ‘How big is my home (what’s the surface area I’ll need to cover)?’ and ‘How “serious” is the cleaning job?’

For instance, if you own dogs that regularly trail mud through your rather sizable house, you’ll need a steam cleaner with a larger tank. On the other hand, if you just need to clean a small, carpeted staircase every now and then, a budget handheld steam cleaner may do the trick.

Almost every major vacuum cleaner brand offers at least one water-only (no chemicals) steam cleaner. You’ll find that most offer a range of steam cleaners, from uprights to cylinders to handhelds. Before you make your purchase, compare prices and read a few online reviews (just don’t let some of the moaning get to you!).

Cleaning the longer you leave, the more stubborn the dirt can become. Having a steam cleaner in your arsenal will definitely give you some added firepower to blast it away, but you should just count on it to save the day. Keep on top of your mess and make life easier for all three of you — that’s you, the hoover and the steam cleaner!

Loose dirt and grime hides in carpeting. Vacuum the floors before you set to work with the steam cleaner. By running the vacuum cleaner slowly and repeatedly over one area at a time, you will reduce the amount of dirt or “mud” pushed through the carpet by the steam cleaning process. As a metter of course, blot stains as they happen; club soda or a mixture of one part white vinegar with three parts water remove colorful stains, such as red wine, pop and juice.
