Have you given much thought to the things you can do with used Christmas cards?

Christmas cards are one of the things that many of us like to give and receive. We spend time choosing the perfect set, writing them out, and mailing them off so that everyone has them in time for a few weeks before the big day. They are such a lovely way to show someone that you are thinking of them at Christmas.

But what do you do with them once you have them? After all, you might end up with quite a number, especially if you have children who receive them off their friends in class. With that in mind, here are some of the things that you can do with your Christmas cards.

During the festive period

Getting Christmas cards can feel like such a lovely way to spread Christmas cheer. It might mean that you want to display them or showcase them in your home. So here are some of the things that you can do with your Christmas cards during the festive period.

Place them on window sills and shelves

One of the most common places to display your Christmas cards is on window sills and shelves. They are prominent positions and can be a great way to utilise your Christmas cards as an additional decoration in your home.

Stick them along the stair banister

Another fun way to display your Christmas cards is along the stair banister. If your staircase is in the hallway then this is a lovely way to add a bit of festive cheer to the entrance of your home. This is often an underused area when it comes to decorations. You can stick your cards with blue-tack along the wooden banister at the bottom.

If your staircase is in one of your rooms then this is another way to display and add some festive decoration. Staircases that are enclosed are a little harder to utilise, which brings me to my next suggestion.

This is both super cute and cost effective saving you monies on a stair garland.

Buy wall hangings to display

Wall hangings are a great way to display your Christmas cards. You can buy specific ones for cards which means you can attach them to the wall hanging very easily. You can then display them throughout your home. Children could have one in their room for any cards they receive from classmates, or you can use the hallways and landings to add some extra Christmas cheer to those areas.

After the festive period

Of course, once the festive period is over and done with, many people are not sure what to do with their Christmas cards. It can feel a little ungrateful just to recycle them and get rid. So what else can you do? Here are a few suggestions to help you make more of your Christmas cards after the festive period.

Use them for next years Christmas tags

A great option is to take those Christmas cards and cut out elements from them that could be used as next year’s Christmas tags. They are a great way to reuse Christmas cards that you have received and utilising them as next year’s gift tags can save you money in the future.

I always did this as a kid and i am pretty sure you did too! Was so much fun wasnt it we woudl always play Christmas songs as we worked too

Make place settings with them

Another thing that you can do with your Christmas cards is creating place settings with them.

Again take your Christmas cards and cut out elements of them and then write down the names of the people that you want to use as place settings for the following year. Or leave them blank ready for when you know he will be who you will be entertaining on the big day.

Things you Can Do with Used Christmas Cards -Keep them in a memory box

If you are particularly sentimental then you may want to keep them and place them in a memory box. If you already have memory boxes for years gone by then you can add them to that or you can create a new one every year and just add all of the sentimental things that you clip throughout the year to them. Doing this can be lovely to look back on in years to come.

My mum kept all her old cards and looking back at them it was lovely to read the messages she had received over the years it made me so happy.

Make bookmarks

Another suggestion would be to use them as bookmarks. Again cut out elements of the Christmas card that you like and then use them as a bookmark for your reading literature. If you are particularly crafty and this is a great way to utilise Christmas images and you could also create them as gifts for people in the future.

Create your own gift bags or wrapping

If you are particularly crafty and like to make homemade things then why not use your Christmas cards as a way to decorate future Christmas gift bags? All you need a plain gift bags in a particular colour and then stick on the pictures of the Christmas cards that you have saved. You could also do this with wrapping paper. Buy plain wrapping paper and then when you wrap up a gift stick on the Christmas card cuttings you have saved. A simple but very effective way of wrapping up future gifts. It can also save you money.

Stick them in a scrapbook

Another option if you are sentimental is to stick them in a scrapbook. You could create a scrapbook for each year and then just stick them in as and when you get them. It is a quick and easy way to keep all of the Christmas cards together ready for you to look back on as and when you’d like to.

Use parts of the card in other ways

Sometimes you might not want to reuse the Christmas cards or feel there isn’t a purpose for a particular upcycle then you can still use the backs of the cards to write shopping lists or notes that you need to look back on. It is a great way to help use up old paper that you can then recycle rather than just getting rid of them once the festive season is done with.

So there you have it all of the things that you can do with your Christmas cards during and after the festive period. I hope it has provided you with some inspiration
