Ways to Strengthen Willpower
Are you looking for ways to strengthen willpower?
Willpower and self control are both important values that we need to have as human beings. An increasing number of studies have pointed out the many benefits of developing stronger willpower, and that makes sense. But is it really possible for us to actually strengthen it, or is it something that we are just born with? Turns out, we actually can.
Read on to discover 6 things you can do to improve your willpower.
Having a deadline is a great way to strengthen willpower. It gives you both a target and a goal and sets your actions within a framework so you have to keep them both contained and focussed. Sometimes a project does not have a deadline ( for example – a book proposal may not have a deadline) but left to its own devises and time frame you may never get your book proposal written. Short deadlines can make you feel stressed and pressured BUT it will also ensure you show up and work hard and get that work finished. I always give my self deadlines whether it be for weight loss or for writing or cleaning the house. It keeps me on track!
Probably the most straightforward way of strengthening your willpower is to avoid putting yourself in temptation’s way as much as you can. When you limit your exposure to that which tempts you, you’ll be less likely to give in.
Some people believe keeping your temptation close to you can help you develop stronger willpower, and that might work too- it all depends on the kind of person you are. Experiment with both these ideas and see what works best for you.
10 Minutes of Meditation
Meditation offers you the fastest results in boosting your willpower. All you need is 10-15 minutes of uninterrupted time every day to train your brain to focus and ignore the urge to wander. If you aren’t already meditating, now’s the time to do so. Just 2-3 days of consistent meditation will have you start seeing results!
Use your Imagination
Your imagination is actually a very powerful weapon that you could put to use to develop your willpower even further. Not so sure about it? Hear us out. What do you feel when you imagine yourself lying on the beach, basking in the sun, or when you imagine yourself soaking in a bathtub? Relaxed, right? When your imagination can influence how you feel, it can influence your habits too! Simply imagining yourself as a person having stronger willpower can actually help you achieve that- even though it sounds crazy!
Stay on Track
Another effective way to boost your willpower is to create self-imposed deadlines and try to stick to them. This turns out be particularly helpful especially when it comes to things you have been putting off for some time. Create a to-do list every day and try to get things done as much as you can.
Making mindfulness a part of your daily life has many benefits, and one of them is better self-control. Instead of doing too much at a time, take things slowly and focus on them more instead of being lost in thought over other things. Even when you do the most simplest of everyday things such as having breakfast or sipping on your coffee, put all your attention just to it- nothing else. When you do things consciously, you are automatically training your brain to improve its self-control.
