9 Home Decor Tips for the Perfect Gentleman

Today I have a host of home decor tips for the perfect gentleman.

If you’re a man and you live in a home, you’ve probably come up against the same problems we all face: how do you find time to clean? How can you make your home feel like a home rather than a place to crash in between the office and the next Netflix binge?

How can you make your home look like it is spotless without actually cleaning the whole house every single day?

The following nine home decor tips for the perfect gentleman will help you, my fellow menfolk, navigate your way through the perils of home décor.

Use Less Stuff

Your home will feel more spacious if you don’t fill it with too many items. Unfortunately, it is easy to fill your home with too much stuff. You can start by keeping unnecessary items out of the house. After you get all the clutter out, you need to focus on what you want to keep in your home. Take each item and ask yourself why you are keeping it. Does it bring you joy when you look at it? Does it serve a purpose? Is it still functional? Are you keeping that object because of the sentimental value that it holds?

If the answer to any of these questions is no, it is time to rethink why you keep that object around. If you cannot develop a good reason, then it is time to pass that item along.

Embrace the great outdoors.

If you’re anything like us, you love to be outside. But sometimes, some things just aren’t made for the great outdoors. Take rugs, for example. You can put them outside, but you don’t want to put them on the ground out there because if it rains, they might get more than just a little wet.

Super tip: A beautifully designed living room is a sign of a well-cultured person. Full of inspiration and harmony, a room full of objects that tell a story is a lovely space to spend quality time with family and friends. One of the most popular alternatives to wallpapers nowadays is murals. You can easily stick it on any wall surface and remove it if you ever decide to redecorate the room. This way, you avoid unnecessary renovation of the entire wall and also save money.

Make it personal

This is the most important thing to remember when decorating your home. If you don’t like it, nobody else will either. That doesn’t mean you should go overboard and put everything you own on display, but it does mean you should pick your favourite things and use them to decorate. Do you know that painting that best explains who you are? Could you put it on your wall? Your favourite books? They could be the perfect addition to a bookcase. That couch that feels like you? It can now serve as the centrepiece of your living room.

Keep it simple

Since you’ll be adding to your home decorating, you should start with minimal furniture. This way, you can create a spacious and open look that makes the most of your home’s square footage. After choosing your furniture, ensure that your living room has just enough seating for your guests. Never overdo it with the seating or else your home will seem cluttered.

Make use of your vertical space.

Instead of mounting furniture to the walls, consider doing something else. For example, you can use an old globe to hold your miscellaneous objects. You can hang them by their wooden hanger to secure them in place. Another option is to make use of large wall hooks to display your coat, bag or umbrellas or other accessories.

Skirting your home

Most homeowners often overlook skirting around their homes. However, skirting is a great way to add a splash of colour to a plain surface.

Skirting can brighten up an otherwise boring house and help with water drainage if done correctly. Many skirting applications can also give homes that extra touch of security by hiding wiring and vents. Clapboard, plastic, wood or shingles are some examples of skirting materials that you can choose from. Styles include the flat variety, bullnose style, the wainscoting type (which attaches directly to your wall) or even one that imitates lattice.

The next step is to decide how you want to attach your skirting. There are three main methods for attaching it: nail, staple or glue. Nailing is easy but is often unsightly if you don’t do it in an inconspicuous place. Staple installation is quick and simple, but the staples will be visible in some cases. Finally, glue is usually seen as the best option because it hides installation lines when done correctly, is strong when dry and can be easily removed with no mess when you need to replace your skirting.

Off-Beat Lamps

Modern lamps are often designed with minimalistic, sleek motifs in mind. While they might look nice in your living room, you don’t want to walk into your bedroom and startle yourself awake at night when you think you’re staring at a headless mannequin. The solution? Get an antique lamp. Antique lamps are great because they often have more character. You can get ones that look like skeletons or even ones that look like spaceships! When you’re trying to make your home edgy, these are the way to go.

Indulge yourself in classical literature.

If you are the type of guy who regularly enjoys curling up with a good book, you will need to have a bookshelf in your home that is worthy of holding all your prized reading materials. Nothing is more unsettling than seeing your beloved books laying across the floor because your bookshelf can’t handle the weight. To construct a luscious-looking bookshelf that will keep your books safe and looking their best.

Maximize light – curtains, blinds, and shades play a big part in determining the mood of a room. Aside from helping to ensure your privacy, these items can be used to control light and allow you to change the atmosphere throughout the day.
