Kruger National Park – and what makes it so very special.
Huge thanks to Helen Wills from Actually Mummy shares with us her dream destination.
Why I want to visit Kruger National Park
My images are rubbish from back then as digital was something only professional photographers did! But it’s the holiday that has stuck in our minds with the most clarity, and not because it was our honeymoon.
South Africa generally was wonderful for us, but the private game reserve we stayed at in the Kruger quite simply took our breath away. Yes, the hotel and the food were lovely, but it was proximity to wild animals, and the incredible knowledge of the game trackers that just stunned us.
We were lucky in that we saw all of the big 5 while we were there – in one drive in fact, which our guide said had never happened to him in 18 years of guiding! We saw a pride of lions bring down and devour a buffalo (I needed a brandy after that drive), and we disturbed a hyena mother from her den as she pelted straight past us. We returned the next morning to find 4 cubs, and counted our lucky stars she had run rather than attacked!
But equally, we had a day where none of them showed themselves. That was the day we saw a baby bird asleep on a branch, a chameleon change colour right in front of us, and a tiny tortoise weed on our hands! Poor thing was probably terrified!
There is nowhere better to see the miracles of nature.
