Enhance Your Garden With a Bit of Hemp – What is Hemp?

The Cannabis sativa is a variety of plant that includes both hemp and marijuana. The latter is grown for its high THC content which is usually smoked in order to get high. Under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, this is banned in the UK, as it is in many countries around the world. As a class B drug, growing marijuana could land you five years in prison.

The hemp plant conversely, contains no more than 0.2% THC meaning that it cannot get you high. This can be grown on an industrial scale for the extraction of and sale of chemical compounds contained within. One of these is CBD which has experienced a surge in popularity recently as a health food supplement. To learn more about CBD, check out this information from Cibdol.

Why Grow Hemp?

Hemp has a number of benefits for you and your garden. Firstly, its roots reach deep down into the ground, even after the crop has been harvested. This helps to keep the soil nourished and benefits the rest of your plants and vegetables. Planting hemp, which is an incredibly fast grower, also prevents other weeds from springing up so that you don’t need to use so many harmful pesticides.

Hemp is very easy to grow, requiring little water and therefore being environmentally friendly. Plus there’s the benefits you can get for it. This plant is full of antioxidants, so it can be safely ingested to boost your mood levels and improve sleep while lowering levels of pain and anxiety. As long as it contains no more than trace amounts of CBD, you won’t get high but you’ll receive plenty of health benefits.

Legal Requirements

Unlike other plants, hemp requires growers to jump through a few legal hoops. If you head onto the UK government Home Office website, you’ll find a form where you can apply for a hemp growing licence online. Without this, any hemp you grow will be breaking the law. You’ll need to detail where the hemp will be grown and how much THC it contains. Once you’ve been given a licence, then you can start growing. Just remember that the police may come to visit to ensure that everything is above board.

Growing hemp may require a bit more admin than planting roses but it does offer many great things. It’s good for the environment as well as the soil and other plants. It also means you can access CBD which has incredible health benefits. If you’re looking for a unique plant to add to your garden, why not try hemp?
