Why we love forest captions

Forests are places the fairies live, and the witches and the wolves. Forest are where we find the plants that will heal us.

Forest bathing, Shinrin-Yoku

“Trees are poems that the earth writes upon the sky.”

― Kahlil Gibran (one of the most beautiful forest captions for sure)

Have you hear of forest bathing?

Just to clear one thing up straight off forest bathing does not mean having a bath in the forest don’t worry we aren’t going to encourage you to do anything quite that wild.

Bear with us on this one, we know it might sound a little woo woo to start with, but actually – well forest bathing is actually really powerful and we’ve got the science to back that up.

So what is forest bathing?

In Japan a very special kind of ‘mindfulness in nature’ has been created and researched. It is called Shinrin-Yoku (pronounce it shin-rin-yo-ku), which translates into English as ‘forest bathing’. It means simply taking in the forest atmosphere and soaking it all up.

It’s great for us as humans and has so many benefits to our minds and bodies, but connecting to nature also helps us to appreciate our precious environment and the more we appreciate it …well the more likely we are to look after it so it’s a double win!

How it works

Researchers, primarily in Japan and South Korea, have found REDUCED stress, anger, anxiety, depression and sleeplessness when people soak up the atmosphere of a forest. After just 15 minutes of forest bathing blood pressure drops, stress levels are reduced and concentration and clear thinking improves. Another study found just an hour in a forest created enough killer white blood cells to protect immunity for a week.

That’s a bit blooming impressive isn’t it!

The science shows there is a whole lot more going on in our relationship with trees than removing carbon dioxide from our air and making it cleaner, trees can massively impact on improving our health and wellbeing.

How to practice Shinrin-Yoku

A forest is ideal, but if you don’t have one close by don’t worry – a park or garden works too. The quieter the better so you can truly relax and not worry what others are thinking. Although with practice you can practice forest bathing without anyone else even realising.

It goes without saying keep yourself safe and don’t go anywhere too remote/ lonely and do let people know where you are at! Shinrin-Yoku is magical thing to share with friends, but if you go with others, make an agreement to try and resist talking until the end of the walk.

Step 1 – Mute your phone so that you can be fully present in the experience.

Step 2 – As you walk towards the trees, make a conscious decision to leave behind your goals and expectations. Take a deep breath and leave your worries behind. If thoughts pop back, draw and imaginary cloud or bubble around them, then imagine them floating off in a cloud.

Wander aimlessly through the trees, allowing your body to take you wherever it wants, rather than your mind. Follow your instincts.

Step 3 – Whenever it feels right, pause. Use your senses to help guide you, look more closely at a leaf or the sky through the trees, notice the sensation of the path beneath your feet, listen to birds or the wind in the trees, what does the forest smell like? Drink it all in.

Step 4 – Find a comfy spot to take a seat and listen to the sounds around you.

Shinrin-Yoku is peaceful, powerful stuff!
