Pollution can be detrimental to all areas of your health. One of the lesser-known impacts is the damage pollution can do to your hair.

Understanding the impact of pollution on hair

Urban air can be packed full of different pollutions. Air pollution is made of carbon monoxide, particulate matter, sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide. These come from exhaust fumes, building emissions and even cigarette smoke.

These pollutants can get trapped between the strands of your hair, causing a whole host of issues. This can irritate your scalp and leave your hair feeling dry, flat and dull.

Haircare strategies for city dwellers

It is important to look after your hair wherever you live, especially if it is exposed to pollution regularly. Getting yourself into a good routine will help to protect your hair and repair any damage.

There are anti-pollution shampoos and conditioners on the market that help to wash away any particles that are on the outside of your hair. An anti-pollution oil is also a good addition to your haircare regime as it helps to form a defensive barrier around your individual hair strands. This prevents pollutants from binding with your hair, stopping it from drying out.

You may also want to add some hair growth vitamins daily to boost your locks and help them to grow healthily.

When it comes to your scalp, use an exfoliator weekly to reduce the buildup of dirt and skin. Be careful not to overdo it though, as exfoliating too often strips your scalp and hair of their essential natural oils.

DIY remedies and natural solutions for pollution-damaged hair

There are at-home remedies that can help to repair your pollution-damaged hair. If your hair is feeling dry you will need to add in some moisture and conditioning products. Coconut oil is a great moisturising product for hair. You can create a mask by boiling it with a couple of curry leaves for 2-3 minutes. Leave it to cool and apply to your head. Leave it in for a few minutes before washing it out thoroughly.

A gentle scalp cleanse with some apple cider vinegar can also help to lower the pH of your head as well as strengthen your hair. It is thought that this liquid has other health benefits as well, so it is a great addition to your self-care. Dilute it with water
