How to prevent wildlife pests from invading your home this summer
As warm weather inches ever closer, we begin to rejoice, take off sweaters, and prepare for our summer tans. Unfortunately, summer also implies some less than desirable things for our home, namely the arrival of all sorts of wildlife pests.
Wildlife pests are most common in the warm months, as they usually seek shelter during the winter and are less likely to go out on long scavenging trips. During the summer, however, they’re faced with ideal conditions, which is why you can expect a fair share of wildlife on your property this summer.
So, what can you do to prevent wildlife pests from invading your home this summer ?
1. Install spikes and nets.
Yes, we know, spikes sound like rather gnarly inventions, but they’re oddly efficient in keeping away pigeons and other birds. As you probably know by now, birds are notorious carriers of a wide range of diseases, to which you and your family can become exposed to in the summer, when pigeons come visiting.
By installing spikes on your windows, balconies, and porch, you deter these birds from roosting on your property. You can also learn more about pigeon control at pigeonrid.com.
Similarly, you’ll want to install nets on your doors and windows, if you don’t want to become mosquito food over the summer. Nets will also keep other undesirable insects, such as flies and stinkbugs at bay.
2. Seal cracks and holes.
Ever wonder how unwanted wildlife gets into your home? It’s usually through cracks and holes in the wall and foundation. Cracks that you didn’t even know were there. So as you prepare for the warm months, you’ll want to thoroughly check your property for cracks, loose boards, missing shingles, and the like, and seal them swiftly.
Ideally, you’ll want to seal these gaps with materials that are difficult to chew and claw through, such as chicken-wire cloth or copper mesh. Otherwise, it’s just a matter of time before an inventive intruder, like a bat, comes through your wall. Find more bat control tips here.
3. Prevent wildlife pests from invading your home this summer Plant natural deterrents.
If you’re worried about wildlife digging up your yard or entering your home, you can always invest in organic deterrents. Many wildlife intruders are known for their sensitive noses, so planting some key pungent plants in your garden might be just the thing you need!
Garlic and chives are both excellent options because of the strong smell, as is pepper. If these don’t work, you can also opt for some aromatic plants such as lavender or marigolds, to deter wildlife from approaching.

4. Keep it clean to prevent wildlife pests from invading your home
The number one reason intruders come to your property in the first place is that they are looking for food. You might not realize it, but crumbs, forgotten leftovers, and spills all constitute common attraction points for wildlife.
So, if you want to avoid having to pay for rat traps every other week, it might be a good idea to do some spring cleaning. Make sure you store food and ingredients in secure containers and limit the food you leave out in the open! Vacuum and sweep regularly, to minimize the number of crumbs in your home.
