How do you hum?
Humming is a simple yet versatile vocalization technique. Here’s how to do humming:
- Relax: Start by relaxing your face, jaw, and throat muscles. Tension can hinder your ability to hum comfortably.
- Close your lips: Keep your lips gently closed but not tightly sealed. This allows air to flow out smoothly.
- Find your pitch: You can either choose a specific note to hum or simply let your voice find a comfortable starting point. Experiment with different pitches until you find one that feels natural.
- Produce a steady sound: Exhale gently through your closed lips while making a vocal sound with your throat. The sound should be steady and continuous.
- Control the volume: You can adjust the volume of your hum by varying the amount of air you exhale and the tension in your vocal cords.
- Experiment with resonance: You can feel the vibrations of your hum in different parts of your face and head. Experiment with moving the placement of your tongue and mouth to explore different resonant spaces.
- Practice: Like any skill, humming improves with practice. Try humming different tunes, scales, or patterns to develop your control and range.
Remember to breathe comfortably while humming, and if you feel any strain or discomfort, take a break and relax your muscles before trying again.
