My Beautiful Things by Jen Walshaw ( AKA Mum in the Madhouse)

Huge thanks to Jen Walshaw from Mum in the Madhouse as she shares her most beautiful things with us today.

The most beautiful day I ever had ……

It would be a toss up of two for me one would be my wedding day – 23 years ago I was lucky enough to marry my best friend, corny I know, but also true.  We had just the best day from my Dad bringing me breakfast in the bath, to my suspenders twanging undone in the car to the church, to the Husbeast being late due to traffic  and so much more.

It was such a wonderful day filled with all the people I loved and also the public commitment of our intention to be together forever. I have such fond memories of my Mum and Dad dancing the night away and us sneaking off back to the hotel without telling anyone for a pot of tea and to catch match of the day!

My other most beautiful Day was my 31st birthday. I was pregnant with my first baby and the husbeast arranged for a surprise day out for us. He took me for afternoon tea at the Ritz and the carol singers (my birthday is 20th December) all sang happy birthday and then he took me to see my favorite musical Mary Poppins.  It was the last time we really did anything with just the two of us before Maxi arrived and we both had a wonderful day.

The most beautiful thing I have ever seen  …

My Mum cradling my babies.  She never put any pressure on me to make her a grandma, but her grandchildren were the apples of her eye and when she held them as newborns it was such a moving moment for all of us.  She was the first person after me and Drew (and the hospital staff) to hold each of them. When she died it was such a great loss to them.

The most beautiful thing I have ever owned …

If my house was on fire the only things I would grab would be my family and my dog.  Everything else is transient. I own what I think are lots of beautiful things such as the boys art and handmade things but life will and does go on without them.  I guess I am not that materialistic, which is a surprise really as I do appreciate nice things.

The most beautiful song I have ever heard …..

There isn’t one song, but a number of them for different parts of my life.

Hallelujah sung by Jeff Buckley For the husbeast
Wires by Athlete for Maxi
Chasing Cars by Snow patrol for Mini

Each and everyone of them has the ability to give me goosebumps and make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. They take me to a certain time and place.

The most beautiful person I know is…..

My Dad was the most beautiful person ever for me.  He was a hard act to follow and so beloved. He was strong, but vulnerable, a man before his time.

He instilled in me strong morals and the knowledge that family is everything.

The most beautiful thing about me is……

I am not beautiful and that is OK. I believe that too much focus is put on beauty in today’s society.  I am resilient, tenacious, independent, loving, loyal, honest, and a total introvert and I think that makes me beautiful and unique on the inside.
