Did you know that pocket watches are back in style. lets take a look ….
Pocket Watches Are Back in Style
For a time, it was thought that we were falling out of love with watches. We were ditching the traditional wristwatch in favour of using computers, tablets and smartphones to tell us the time. Then, smartwatches exploded onto the market, and they became the ‘latest’ thing to own. But, now there has been another shift, and the classic pocket watch is back in vogue.
I am so please – how stylish they are!
Some of you may be lucky enough to have a pocket watch that has been passed down to them from their grandparents or great-grandparents. If you haven’t inherited a pocket watch but still want one, you should know that Rapport London offers a large selection of pocket watches including the Mechanical Half Hunter and Double Hunter.
Why pocket watches are back in fashion
Through the century’s ‘gentleman’ were never seen without a pocket watch. That was until after the late 1940’s when wristwatches became fashionable. But the cyclical nature of fashion is seeing the classic pocket watch making a big comeback. Designers such as Tom Ford and Cartier have used them in the fashion shows, and celebrities like Johnny Depp, Justin Timberlake have been seen wearing them.
But why are people turning their back on technology in favour of mechanical watches? Well, one of the answers could be that people are tiring of technology. There’s no denying that technology moulds every aspect of our lives from how we communicate to how we order our food. While this isn’t a bad thing, there’s a growing appreciation for great craftsmanship and beautiful design. And, pocket watches are the epitaph of both of these things. People who wear pocket watches see them more than a timepiece. They describe them as a mechanical marvel. And, when you open up the back of a pocket watch to see the cogs and gears working smoothly, you can see why they call them this.
Another reason why the pocket watch is seeing a resurgence could be put down to the popularity of TV shows, like Downtown Abbey and Boardwalk Empire, and films like Sherlock Holmes, which seem to romanticise the fashion from that era.
How to wear a pocket watch
If you’re concerned that a pocket watch may not be right for you. Don’t be. The versatility of the pocket watch means in can be worn in many different ways and with different outfits.
For those who favour the traditional three-piece suit, a pocket watch can be stored in the jacket pocket, or it can be worn on the waistcoat. When wearing it with a waistcoat, the watch should be attached to a watch chain, with one end of the chain passing through a buttonhole and the watch itself placed in a pocket on the opposite side.
If your style is a little more relaxed, a pocket watch will add style and sophistication even to the most of casual outfits, like jeans and a shirt. You can choose to store the watch in a trouser pocket, or you may prefer to attach it to a belt hoop with a keychain. Or for a truly unique look, attach the watch to a long metal chain and wear it around your neck!
Pocket Watches Are Back in Style is a feature post
I absolutely love pocket watches! They remind me of my Great-Grandfather. Sadly I wasn’t bequeathed one of his pocket watches, but I will definitely have to invest in one! I’m so glad they are trendy at the moment – I’ll have to invest in some tweed too! Thank you for sharing such a lovely post xxx
