5 Ways to Spruce Up Your Work Environment

Ways to Spruce Up Your Work Environment

Let’s face it – no one WANTS to sit in a dreary cubicle staring at carpeted walls and a miserable houseplant for eight hours a day. Breaking out of that traditional mould when it comes to office design can be tricky since comfort and professionalism don’t always go hand in hand, but it is possible. Let’s take a look at some ways to up the creative flow of your workspace without sacrificing a professional front for clients.

Create “living walls”

Remember that miserable houseplant we mentioned? Turns out there’s a unique way to incorporate nature into your office space without settling for wilted ferns. Creating a living wall (or green wall) has several benefits, including improved air quality, reduced stress (which also cuts down on sick days), and of course the pleasing aesthetic that a wall of plants provides. Almost any type of plants can be used for this mural-type wall décor, making it easy to personalise the wall according to your business. For small spaces, there are DIYs online, but for larger offices, this is a project best left to a professional. Ask your UK office design firm for options.

Ways to Spruce Up Your Work Environment – Utilise natural light

In this era of environmental awareness, more and more companies are opting to go green when it comes to lighting. Ditch the drapes and allow the sun to do its job and brighten up your office – literally. Not only will you be saving money on electricity, but there are other benefits as well, including increased productivity, improved mood, and better concentration – all factors that add up to a more successful workplace.

Make it homey

If you’re spending 30-40 hours of your life every week in the same place, it makes sense to want to feel comfortable in that space. Forget uncomfortable desk chairs and fluorescent lighting and instead opt for cosy armchairs, eclectic table lamps, and miniature Zen gardens at workstations. More relaxed employees are more productive employees!

Incorporate art to Spruce Up Your Work Environment

We aren’t talking about that so-called motivational poster with the kitten in a tree and the caption “Hang in there”. Well-placed, thoughtfully curated pieces provide not only visual stimulation but also serve as pieces of inspiration, particularly in creative workplaces. Keep things fresh by rotating pieces on a monthly or quarterly basis. Art in the workplace is most effective when employees have input on what is displayed and where.

Don’t underestimate the power of colour

It has been well-documented that colour can affect mood. Warm colours like red, yellow, and orange are stimulating and can increase appetite (perfect for those in the restaurateur industry). Cool colours like blue, green, and purple instil a feeling of calmness and spark creativity. Utilising colour psychology in the workplace is not a new practice, but if your office is in need of a new paint job, it may be worth it to keep your colour scheme in mind.

As offices and other workspaces evolve with the times and the needs of employees, new ideas are constantly being explored and implemented. Got a ground-breaking office design idea? Let us know in the comments!

I really like the living wall idea, I was thinking about adding one of those aquarium gardens to my office but a green wall would probably be easier to maintain, plus we wouldn’t have to worry about a hundred gallons of water flooding the place if someone bumped into it, a definite plus!
