Best Ways to Achieve Personal Growth

Aew you looking for the best ways to achieve personal growth?

“The only journey is the journey within.” – Rainer Maria Rilke

All of us hold ambitions, hopes and dreams, from childhood onwards. Some we manage to accomplish in our lifetimes, others falling by the wayside – too unrealistic, too expensive, too time-consuming. Whether it be losing weight, bringing up a family, finding our dream job, achieving personal freedom by learning how to drive, or seeing the world, personal growth over the course of our lifetimes is desirable, and possible.

Of course if there’s one thing the world’s not short of, it’s experts on how to achieve personal growth. Here’s some of the best advice on how to realise your plans:

Know Yourself

Without a solid starting point it’s difficult to reach your destination, so it’s important from the outset to know the kind of person you are, and be at peace with that. Spend some time listing what you believe are the strengths and weaknesses of your character, such as determination and selfishness. Identify which of them are likely to help or hinder you in the path to growth. It’s useful to ask your friends and family for their input also, as they may have a very different view to how you see yourself. Don’t get down if you find negatives outweighing positives, the important thing is to know who you really are.

Establish What You Want

You may say you want a better paid job with more responsibility, but is that really what you actually want, or just what you think you should be aiming for? Look at the implications of the goal you’re striving for – in this instance you’d be looking at a higher standard of living, perhaps more happiness at work and respect from colleagues.

But would it also entail working much longer hours, having to take on tasks you don’t enjoy, and being at greater risk of the sack if things don’t go right? If you are set on a course, then give your goal a real focus – break it into stages to make it easy – so to continue the example, step one might be asking for more responsibilities, step two might be learning appropriate new skills, step three might be researching which companies have the kind of vacancies you’re looking for.

Be Prepared inb order to achive personal growth

Personal growth requires sacrifice. If you want to lose weight, are you ready to give up some of your favourite foods, perhaps indefinitely? Get up an hour earlier every day for a run before work? If you want to travel are you prepared to lose touch with family and friends for some time, miss out on home comforts and leave what may be a good job? Success at this task could be tough, and you need to expect that or you may find yourself giving up early on.

Take The Long View

The other thing about personal growth – it doesn’t happen overnight. You need to have a long-term, realistic approach, to convince yourself and others. Many people find it helpful to document their journey for inspiration and to cheer themselves on when things get difficult.

Take Responsibility

No-one else can do this for you. It’s your life, your ambitions. If things work out, then it’s all down to you, and if things go wrong, you can’t blame anyone but yourself. But things will go right, because you have gone about things the right way: you’ve undergone a period of introspection to identify what makes you, you; you’ve decided firmly what it is you want to achieve in life, and learned as much about it as you can to stand the best chance of success; you’ve recognised you will need to make personal sacrifices along the way, and come to terms with that, and you’re not looking for shortcuts. You can have faith in yourself and your capabilities. All that’s left to be done now is to start down that road.
