Today – tips for good heart health
For a few personal reasons, I am rather preoccupied with heart health. My lovely mum had issues with her heart throughout her life and 2 heart valve replacements. I have had some issues with my lungs and my heart is really important to me. I need it strong and functioning really well.
let’s be frank – we all do. Our heart is what keeps us alive.
So, without further ado here are 5 tips for good heart health. I hope they inspire you to take good care of yourself today and every day.
5 tips for good heart health
Skip the salt
Adults should have no more than one teaspoon of salt per day to meet the recommended levels. salt can have a really negative effect on blood pressure and lead to poor heart health and we need to keep a close eye on this. We also need to keep an ey on the salt levels in pre-packaged foods
Get checked
If you have any heart concerns that it is important to get checked up. A private consultant cardiologist can help from assessment to treatment to diagnosis – they can also provide you with any advice and guidance you may require
Stop smoking
Stop smoking for better heart health – it is as easy and as complicated as that. According to the NHS, smoking is one of the main causes of coronary heart disease. One year after giving up, your risk of a heart attack falls to about half that of a smoker.
Half.
Now that is an amazing statistic that is in your control. I know it is not easy but it is ABSOLUTELY worth it.
Eat well
It is so important to eat well for your heart health, reducing fat, eating more fibre, making sure you get your 5 a day will all help it function efficiently. It is also really important to manage your weight and make sure you are a healthy BMI. Weight management can be complicated and tricky especially if it is something you have struggled with for years. A visit to your GP might be a great place to start if you need some support.
Get moving
Adults should exercise for a minimum of 150 minutes a week – that is 5 x 30-minute exercise sessions. So lets’ just do it. Schedule these sessions in your diary and find something you love whether it is running or tennis, going to the gym or cycling it really doesn’t matter. Just make sure it is something that you enjoy. It is also about keeping your body (and especially your heart) in really great shape. And if you find exercise dull….have a look at my post on how to make walking less boring
