Why you should visit Greece this summer
History
Those who love to dive deep into the history of their holiday destination will be happy to hear that Greece is packed full of incredible ancient sites.
In fact, there are currently 19 UNESCO world-heritage sites to uncover, including the Acropolis in Athens, the Old Town of Corfu and the Medieval city of Rhodes.
The latter is one of the largest Greek islands and is famous for its incredible Old Town, where you’ll find the medieval Street of the Knights and the Palace of the Grand Masters. If you’re keen to explore the mainland, head to the archaeological sites of Delphi, Mystras and Olympia.
Beaches
Greece is world-renowned for its breathtaking beaches, with crystal-clear waters and golden sands. They are the perfect place to relax and unwind with a great book, soak up the rays and take refreshing dips in the sea.
You won’t be short of options, particularly among the Greek islands. Some of the most popular places to head for sun, sea and sand include Santorini, Crete, Rhodes, Kos, and Corfu.
Yet one of the most awarded beaches, Myrtos Beach, sits on the island of Kefalonia just north of Argostoli. Here, you can swim while admiring the rocky white cliffs, lush green vegetation, and white sands.
Food
There are plenty of delicious dishes to enjoy during a holiday in Greece. The cuisine is based largely on the Mediterranean diet, with lots of seafood, grilled meat, potatoes, olives and more on offer.
Must-try dishes include moussaka, souvlaki and papoutsakia (stuffed aubergines). A great option for lunches on the go is gyros, which is a pita stuffed with roasted meat, onion, tomatoes, tzatziki and sometimes chips.
If you want to tantalise your tastebuds with something sweet, go for baklava. This is made of flaky filo pastry, chopped nuts and honey and is one of the most popular pastries in Greece.
Weather
It’s no secret that the British summer can be uncertain when it comes to the weather. So, if you’re keen to soak up the sunshine during your trip, Greece is unlikely to disappoint.
The country enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot and dry weather during the summer months. The hottest time to visit is usually July and August, with an average of 29°C in Athens and long days of sunshine and bright blue skies.
Or, if you’re keen to enjoy slightly lower temperatures and smaller crowds, May, June, September, and October may suit you well.
