How to Prepare for a Well-Organised Moving Day

A smooth moving day is the result of the weeks, if not months, leading up to it. Movers who reach their new front door calmly, with their beds going up by late afternoon, are usually the ones who have prepared.

Packing gets most of the attention, and it matters. Booking a date and clearing out the cupboards each need to start sooner than most people expect.

How to Prepare for a Well-Organised Moving Day

Lock In the Date and the Removals Team Early

The date drives everything. Key collection, school runs, time off work, and parking permits all hang off it, so booking the removals team should be right at the start of the process. Way before anyone buys packing tape.

London gets busy at the end of the month, when tenancies roll over, and completions bunch together, and Friday slots go quickly for the same reason. Booking early gives a household a choice of dates and gives the team time to plan the job in detail, from parking to which furniture needs dismantling.

Clear Out Before Any Boxes Get Taped

Everything that goes into a box takes time at both ends of the move, which is why purging unwanted or donatable belongings makes a huge difference.

Every home has that drawer. It’s usually in the kitchen, holding takeaway menus, dead batteries, a key nobody can identify, a birthday candle and a knot of elastic bands. If it gets tipped straight into a box marked miscellaneous, it travels across London only to be emptied into another drawer at the other end.

Charity shops across North London take good-condition furniture and homeware, and some will collect bigger pieces from the house. Local selling groups are good for things like desks and bikes, although buyers take their time turning up, so listings need to go up early.

Parking, Lifts and the Street Outside

Most North London boroughs, including Camden, Islington, Haringey and Barnet, require an application to suspend a parking bay, and the council needs notice to put up the signs. Getting the application in as soon as the date is fixed saves circling the block on the day. Flats bring their own questions, from lift bookings to concierge rules about loading times.

Local knowledge helps a great deal here. A North London removal company will know which mansion blocks have lifts too small for a wardrobe and where a large van can pull in on a controlled parking zone street without blocking a bus route.

Neighbours appreciate a friendly note through the door shortly before, which may feel a bit old-fashioned, but it means nobody is caught off guard when the van pulls up outside for the morning.

The Bag That Travels in the Car

An essentials bag is, well, essential.

It travels in the car with the household and holds the things needed in the hours after the van leaves: kettle, mugs, teabags, milk, phone chargers, toilet roll, a basic toolkit and clean bedding. Paperwork for the completion, any medication, parking permit details and the keys for the old and new properties go in there too.

Just don’t forget a roll of big bags. There’s always more rubbish on the day than anyone plans for.

The Morning of the Move

On the morning itself, a quick walk-around with the moving team’s leader helps, pointing out fragile pieces and anything that’s being left behind. If there’s a partner or friend around, splitting up works well: one person stays with the team to answer questions, and another heads over to open the new place and take the meter readings.

A household that books early and packs with the new home in mind ends moving day with the beds made and the kettle on. The real fun begins the morning after.
