Luxury Cottages in Holkham – where to stay and what to see in glorious Norfolk.
Are you looking for luxury cottages in Holkham?
We absolutely love Norfolk and have been there on many a family holiday. One of our favourite places in all of Norfolk, that we return to again and again, is Holkham star of the silver screen and just breathtaking. Oh, how wonderful it is! If you haven’t been then you really must. Everyone I know who has visited has just glowed when talking about Holkham. It is a really special place. Let me tell you a bit about it and then show you some absolutely incredible luxury cottages in Holkham.
The Holkham Estate
Holkham is home to the stunning Holkham Hall and surrounded by the UK’s largest nature reserve and an absolutely outstanding local beach. That in itself sounds impressive, doesn’t it? But wait – there is SO much more to this 25,000-acre estate!
Holkham Hall
The Holkham Estate is in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and within it lies Holkham Hall. Holkham Hall is spectacular, it is an 18th-century Palladian country house and was the ancestral home of the Coke family for more than 400 years. The Hall is a member of the Treasure Houses group which consists of ten of the most magnificent palaces, houses and castles in England. It is a family home but a number of rooms are open to visit and they are simply stunning. The art of display is world class and includes works by Rubens, Van Dyck, Claude, Gaspar Poussin and Gainsborough.
Holkham Hall hosts many events throughout the year including classical music concerts and a food festival and it is so worth visiting. Here is what else is on offer:
Activities
The grounds of Holkham Hall are ideal for cycling and bike hire is available by the courtyard. There is also a stunning lake you can have a paddle on. There are also lots of fabulous themed walks as well as a restaurant and gift shops. It is a lively, beautiful, and lovely place to visit and you can even stay in luxury cottages in Holkham – right on the grounds!
Nature
For nature lovers, Holkham is a delight. The 3000-acre park that surrounds the hall has red deer roaming freely and they are a beautiful sight. There is a beautiful walled garden to visit too and a working farm nearby which you can go and see.
Play
There is a brilliant woodland play area for the kids too with high walkways, zip lines, tree houses and so much more.
Field to Fork
Holkham also has an interactive experience for families called Field to Fork which shares the history of farming at Holkham. You can even have a go at driving a virtual tractor and dressing up!

Holkham beach
Just outside the walls of Holkham Park is Lady Anne’s Drive. This leads down through a beautiful pine woodland to the wide golden sands of the dog-friendly beach This is a beach absolutely not to be missed. It is HUGE and gorgeous and you can walk for miles. It is unspoilt and uncommercialised and very special. It is probably our favourite in the whole of the UK.
Places to Eat in Holkham
The Victoria Inn in Holkham village serves fantastic local, seasonal food throughout the day – we have visited there ourselves and it a lovely warm and welcoming place to eat. Holkham Hall’s Courtyard Cafe does lovely lunches and snacks too. There are also lots of lovely pubs in the surrounding villages too.
Places to visit
You can walk along the beach at Holkham till you get Wells-next-the-Sea. The best thing about Wells is its rather fabulous beach huts which are just so cute. There are lots of great things to do in Wells including a light railway, the BEST chip shop, a chance to go crabbing and eat on a pirate boat too!
Nearby you can also find Burnham, Brancaster, Cley-next-the-Sea and the town of Holt to name just a few. My top tip would be to go out on a boat and see the seals at Blakeney Point. You get so close to the seals on these trips, there are so many and it’s all kinds of wonderful.
Holkham and the silver screen
Holkham Hall and its local area have also been made famous by appearing in several films and TV shows. Let me tell you about just some of the amazing scenes shot here …
- David Jason and Maggie Smith filmed in the great saloon of Holkham Hall for the First World War drama, ‘All The King’s Men’.
- Gwyneth Paltrow filmed the last scenes of ‘Shakespeare in Love’ on Holkham beach.
- ‘The Duchess’ with Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes was filmed at Holkham in 2007.
- Holkham has also featured as the inside of Buckingham Palace in a docu-drama on Victoria and Albert.
Holkham is a film star in its own right!
