5 Beautiful DIY Christmas Decorations For Your Home

With the festive season nearly here, you may have begun decorating your home for Christmas. Or maybe you haven’t started yet and you need some inspiration. Well, you’re in the right place because we have some beautiful, easy and elegant decorations for you to turn your home into a festive grotto.

Although traditional decorations such as tinsel, bright colours like red and green can bring joy and nostalgia, you may want to have decorations around the house that are slightly more minimal and neutral. Although we have included traditional decorations, we also understand that bright colours and textures aren’t for everyone! All of the crafts below are really simple to make and will bring warmth and cheer to your home this Christmas. Of course, these decorations can be made by you during a solo mindfulness activity, or they can be made with children and encourage fine motor skills, as well as provide quality time together.

DIY Christmas Decorations For Your Home

Cosy Lantern Craft

Lighting up your home with this wonderful lantern craft is bound to bring some cosiness and comfort to your house. All you need to achieve these gorgeous star lanterns is glue, card, a hole punch and some fairy lights (optional). What’s great about this craft is that you can make it to your or your child’s taste.

You can choose whatever colour card you desire and make any patterns with the hole punch. The hole punch patterns you make will determine how the light streams from your lovely homemade lanterns, so go crazy! If you can’t get your hands on fairy lights, these stars still make a beautiful hanging display, maybe in front of windows or hanging from a bannister. If you do have fairylights, it will light up your star and make it all the more special.

Fill the centre of the lantern with the fairylights and hang them from the ceiling or doors. Or, stand them up on a windowsill to create a cosy Christmassy display.

Dried Orange Slices

This one is a super easy and affordable craft. All you need is some oranges, a knife and an oven.

The smell of oranges around the home has to be one of the most festive smells going so making these in December will make your home smell amazing. All you need to do is chop your oranges into thin slices (leaving the skin on) and pop them in the oven on a low heat (120-130 degrees for a fan-assisted oven) and cook for around 1 hour, depending on the oven. When your orange slices are ready, you can pop them into a bowl or make them part of a display to make your home smell wonderful.

You could also create a garland with cinnamon sticks to add that extra Christmas spice or thread string through them and make Christmas tree decorations. Not only will these easy and delicious decorations make your house smell incredible, but they also last for years and make wonderful gifts, too.

Christmas Gnome Decoration

Don’t gonks just remind you of Christmas? They’re adorable and are a great craft activity for older children and adults.

With simple instructions, these little gnomes are a great place to begin your crafting journey. You can personalise them to your taste, if you have a beige, minimalist vision then choose neutral colours, or go all out and choose every bright colour you can! For children, they can enjoy designing their gnome and having fun gifting them to friends of family. Also, these decorations are super versatile, you can use them as cute Christmas tree decorations, or they can be hung from cupboards, windowsills or propped up in a winter wonderland display. They don’t need many materials, either. Just glue, yarn or wool and a toilet roll tube!

Wrapping Paper Snowflakes

Yep, you heard that right. You can make beautiful snowflake decorations out of wrapping paper. Not only are these wonderful decorations sustainable and recyclable, they’re quick to make and only require household items such as wrapping paper, scissors, glue and a stapler. The snowflakes can be made to your taste as you can choose the wrapping paper you want to use, whether that be patterns, glitter or plain. You can mix and match wrapping paper to make a beautiful display of snowflakes.

The template is easy to follow which makes it great for doing with young children whilst still producing the most beautiful decorations.

Christmas Card Boxes

Now these ones aren’t strictly a decoration, but they definitely can be! These beautiful homemade, recycled card boxes make the perfect presents to gift friends and family. If you’re someone who loves cards and doesn’t throw them away, but also doesn’t know what to do with them, then this is the perfect craft for you.

These beautiful boxes can be used every year and they only require old Christmas cards, a pencil a ruler and some scissors. Not to mention, they would make a wonderful keepsake for grandparents from their grandchildren and can be part of a festive display within your home. Use them as jewellery boxes, gift boxes or stationary. What a wonderful, affordable craft to decorate your home or gift this holiday season.
