With the country in lockdown and everyone spending time at home, there are some positives to come out of it. It is a chance for you to develop some skills or hobbies that you might never have had the opportunity to do before, such as sewing! Not only is it a relaxing hobby to start, but you can achieve some great end products as a result of your newly found skill, including new clothes for your children. No matter their age, you can produce some stunning garments that will be the envy of all your friends and family. So let’s get started on just how you can achieve this.

Step One: Find Your Patterns

It is recommended to find a pattern from which you can work on, to make the process as easy as possible. This sewing pattern could be for a dress, trousers, jumpsuit, romper suit, or even a costume! It is entirely up to you what you choose, but as a beginner, it might be better to start small and simple. Why not make a cute hat to get you started? Then, with more experience, move onto bigger projects.

If you want to jump straight in, that isn’t a problem! Sometimes the best-learnt things come from trying. So decide who you will be making the clothes for, as patterns for a baby will be vastly different to those of a toddler or older child, then choose from a selection of sewing patterns suitable for your child, and move onto step two.

Top Tip: If possible, ask your kids what they would like for you to make so that they are involved in the process.

Step Two: Purchase Fabric

With your sewing pattern to hand, you will need to purchase the suitable fabric needed to start. Picking something that is too stretchy or tough could completely ruin the entire outfit. Often when you select a sewing pattern, there are recommendations for the type of fabric you should use. A dress, for example, might require cotton fabrics, whereas a costume might require fleece or synthetic fur depending on the particular pattern you choose.

It might benefit you to research the different types of fabric before you get started. The most common types of fabric used to make clothes include:

  • Cotton
  • Linen
  • Silk

This could be a great starting point.

Step Three: Use the Patterns to Cut the Fabric

Once you have your fabrics and your patterns ready, you will want to use the patterns to cut out the required shape needed. The sewing patterns instructions will take you through each step, such as how to set out the pattern on the fabric. Equipment you may need to carry this out includes pins, fabric scissors (as these are designed to cut through fabric perfectly), and a tracing wheel just in case. Lay the fabric on the right side out, then place down your sewing pattern pieces. You will want to pin these down to the fabric before cutting.

Step Four: Check the pieces

Before sewing beautiful childrenswear, you need to transfer all the pattern markings to the inside of your fabric. Then check that the pieces match up correctly so that the fit will be right.

Step Five: Get Sewing!

Now comes the fun part! Get out the sewing machine and carefully sew your fabric pieces together. You can stop at any time to check that the fit is right. Take your time, follow the instructions step by step, and by the end, you should have a beautiful garment ready for your child!
