Romantic movies on Netflix
I have been browsing the netflix movies at FlixList determined to draw myself up a list of great viewing over the next few weeks to help me relax. I still don’t seem to have come down from the chaos of the holidays. I have a huge pile of work on too.But I have learnt from experience that unless I take a little relax time out for me each day I burn out. So I need to make sure I have a great list of movies to watch whenever I get the chance.
So what genre?
It has to be romance. I am such a romantic at heart and I find romantic films transport me to another world, another state and lift the pressures. Here are my top 5 picks from Netflix. It is so easy to search your chosen genre at Flixlist, the Netflix search engine, and create a viewing list of you own,
The age of innocence
I studied this book as part of my American literature degree but somehow missed seeing the movie. It is a tale of nineteenth-century New York high society in which a young lawyer falls in love with a woman separated from her husband, while he is engaged to the woman’s cousin. It stars Daniel Day Lewis and Michelle Pfeiffer, I love a period drama/romance.
84 Charring Cross Road
I haven’t seen this film in years but oh how lovely it is. I am delighted to have rediscovered it. The book moved me so much I actually went in search of 84 Charring Cross Road once. Sadly it was a shop. It is the true story of a transatlantic business correspondence about used books that developed into a close friendship (budding romance.) It stars Anthony Hopkins and Anne Bancroft and it is a classic.
You’ve got mail
Oh I so wanted to be Meg Ryan and work in a tiny bookshop telling stories after I saw this movie. Her internet connection is so slow it’s hard to believe this was just 18 years ago. A lovely classic romance also starring Tom Hanks. A really warm your heart movie.
Les Misérables
I have heard such amazing things about Les Misérables but never yet mad eit to the west end to see it. But now I dont have too as it has been made into a movie. Victor Hugo’s epic tale of love and sacrifice. It stars some big names including Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen, Amanda Seyfried, Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman.
New In town
New in town is about a Miami businesswoman adjusts to her new life in a tiny Minnesota town. I worked a lot in Minnesota when I was younger and I adore Renée Zellweger and Harry Connick Jr so I am pretty sure I will enjoy this one!
So that’s my list of romantic movies on Netflix, all ready to view.

84 Charing Cross Road is my favourite film of all time. It is such a wonderful – and true – ‘story’ and Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins do it proud. I can’t watch it without weeping at the end, it is so beautiful, especially the small role by Dame Judi Dench as Hopkins’ (Frank Doel’s) wife. No doubt, you’ve read the book? Equally lovely.
I also love You’ve Got Mail but not seen New in Town or Les Mis (only the stage show in 1990, all those years ago!)
I often browse through Netflix but can never find anything I want to see! I wonder if you’ve seen The Enchanted April? If not, and it’s on Netflix (don’t know if it is) then I do recommend this to you.
