Royal Victoria Country Park

This gorgeous, expansive country park is located in the town of Netley, just outside of Southampton’s city limits. It is a quintessential English country park, with its coastal location a particular draw, thanks to its stunning views of the Isle of Wight and the Solent. Stretching over 200 acres, the park offers a variety of habitats and ecosystems, including woodland, open grassland, and salt marshes, alongside several miles of charming coastline and a picturesque shingle beach. The park also offers a variety of activities, experiences, and amenities, including a cafe, an adventure playground, a nature trail, a miniature railway, and a model village.

Mayflower Park

Mayflower Park is one of the largest and most popular parks within Southampton, thanks to its excellent waterfront location and views of the River Test. Right in the historic town center, it was named after the ship that took the pilgrims to Plymouth Rock in America, and is a well-used green space. It also offers a community garden, a lovely tranquil space with a beautiful pond, a variety of flower beds, and fruit trees.

Woolston Eyes Nature Reserve

This beautiful nature reserve is located in Woolston, on the edge of Southampton, and offers an oasis from the hustle and bustle of the city, as well as the chance to discover some of the area’s lesser-spotted wildlife. A Site of Special Scientific Interest, Woolston Eyes is a hugely important part of the nature conservation efforts in the area, as well as being a haven for bird life from warblers to kingfishers. The reserve includes four habitats – rough grassland, willow scrub, reed wetlands, and woodlands, as well as several ponds.

Itchen Valley Country Park

Another fantastic country park, Itchen Valley is one of the best examples of English landscape design in the area. A picturesque park set, as the name suggests, in the Itchen Valley, offers a variety of different landscapes to explore including woodland, meadows, and wetlands, as well as a large lake. The 440 acres of space makes it one of the largest green spaces around Southampton, and it has been awarded 10 Green Flag awards. There’s loads to do in the park, from a Go Ape! adventure playground and two outdoor play areas for younger kids to various nature trails that criss cross the park, offering wildlife and bird lovers a chance to explore. You can even go cycling or horseriding on the specially designed trails.
