How to Use Pinterest Moodboards for Inspiration

What Is a Pinterest Moodboard?

Whether you’re a complete newbie or you’re just not familiar with the functionality of Pinterest, moodboards are one of the most powerful inspiration tools out there. In short, a Pinterest moodboard is a digital collection you customise and curate full of imagery, colours, textures and ideas with one common theme.

Your Pinterest moodboard is basically the visual brainstorming space that lets you find inspiration and explore every possibility before committing itoyour real life.

One of the most common things to use a Pinterest moodboard for is interior design inspiration. Here’s how you get started.

Know What You’re Trying To Plan

The first thing you have to do when it comes to creating an effective Pinterest moodboard for your home design inspiration is to know what you’re trying to achieve. Before you embark on your moodboarding, think about the vibe you’re looking to curate.

For example, if you’re looking to promote a calming, relaxing space, looking for neutral wall art inspiration might be the best fit for you. Or if you’re looking to emulate a mid-century feel, you might want to start pinning examples that include elements of dark wood and deep colours.

When you choose a loose theme before you start pinning ideas you’re able to keep your moodboard focused and reduce the risk of you feeling overwhelmed. There’s no limit to how many boards you can create so niching them out as much as possible can help you stay on track.

Make Your Board(s)

The next step is to create your board or boards (depending on exactly how many ideas you’re trying to flesh out). When you create your board, name it based on what you are trying to achieve ie. Cosy bedroom decor ideas or something of the like so that you know exactly where your inspiration is for each room of your home.

If you’d prefer your boards to stay private, you can set them to secret so that they’re only visible to you.

Start Pinning

The third and final step is also the most fun and it’s to start pinning ideas, images and inspiration to your dedicated moodboards. Remember you can always go back through your moodboards and cull images that don’t align with your vision so there’s no harm in pinning more broadly.

Pin images that catch your attention, feel aligned with your vision or feel like the vibe you’re trying to emulate.

Some of the things you might want to keep an eye out for are images in your colour palette, lighting that fits your mood, layouts of rooms you might want to emulate, furniture, textures, wall art and any other decor items that catch your eye.

Once you add a broad range of pins, you can start going through and removing any you don’t feel align with your vision. If you spot anything that feels out of place, you can simply remove it from your moodboard never to be seen again!

It’s Time To use Your Inspiration

Once your moodboard is curated and you’re happy with it, it’s time to turn that inspiration into action! Take your ideas and turn them into reality. Whilst you don’t have to copy the imagery directly (and you probably won’t be able to do a direct copy) using your moodboard as inspiration can help you curate the vibe you want for your space and make it far easier to take action!

If you’re thinking of making changes to your home and you don’t know where to start, Pinterest might just be your new best friend!
