Parkinson’s Research on black coffee benefits and side effects

For some people, mostly men, coffee consumption may reduce their risk for Parkinson’s Disease. It is thought that this most likely occurs because caffeine may block certain receptors in the body, which may increase how much dopamine is available for the brain.

The Honolulu Heart Program’s recent study of 8,000+ men over a 30 year period showed that those men who drank the most cups of coffee per day were the least likely to develop Parkinson’s over the non-coffee drinkers of the same age groups. However, in this study, coffee drinking did not produce the same results for women, thought to be most likely from a relationship/interaction with estrogen replacement therapy. Further study is suggested in this area.

Black Coffee Benefits and Side Effects on Women’s Health

According to the American Heart Association, women who drink coffee regularly reduce their risk of stroke. Stroke is the 3rd leading cause of death in North America.

* 20% less in women drinking four or more cups/day.
* 19% less in women drinking 2 to 3 cups/day.
* 12% less in women drinking coffee 5 to 7 times a week.

Sodas and teas did not show this same benefit and were not shown to decrease the risk for stroke.

However, this same study also showed that women who drank more coffee tended to smoke more than their less coffee drinking counterparts. So make sure you aren’t one that thinks that by drinking more coffee, you are offsetting potential smoking risks. They will not.
