Bath
When your base is London, the whole of Britain is your oyster – but if you fancy putting some miles between yourself and the capital without spending hours on the M1, there’s no better place than Bath. Even if you’ve recently ditched your car, it’s easy enough to get car insurance for a day and borrow a pal’s, for a chance to visit this stunning Roman town on your own terms.
Bath was named for the Roman baths that still stand in its centre, and make for a fantastic centrepiece for a historically-minded day trip. Though bathing is off-limits in the archaeological monument itself, there is a thermal spa that benefits from the same naturally heated waters the Romans did a short walk away!
Windsor
To those unfamiliar with the South of England, Windsor is often seen as an extension of London; it is situated on the River Thames, it is home to royalty, and it is a stone’s throw from Heathrow Airport. However, Windsor is a town distinct from the City of London, and all the better for it!
Windsor’s key day trip appeal comes in the form of Windsor Castle, the historic royal residence that has accommodated monarchs since the days of William the Conqueror. Whether alone or with family, the grounds are a joy to explore!
Cambridge
If you’re after a day with a leisurely pace and a distinctly academic air, Cambridge is a glorious place to spend the day. Cambridge is a beautiful university town north of London, renowned for the world-class further education institution of its name. The University of Cambridge is over 800 years old, with a rich history of academic progress to uncover during your stay.
But Cambridge isn’t all about its university and college houses, edifying as they are to behold. The town itself is wondrous to explore – and you haven’t truly been to Cambridge without a spell punting on the River Cam.
