When I was a child I was well educated in the health benefits of garlic … for horses. My aunty would give her beautiful bay mare Ria garlic to stop her from coughing and it always worked. I never really realized garlic could have health benefits for people too!
I thought the benefits of garlic were all about taste and it really makes dishes just so much more yummy. I was so wrong.
Garlic is a member of the onion family, an Allium.
It is native to Central Asia and northeastern Iran and it is usually used as seasoning.
We use garlic powder and bulbs of garlic in our kitchen and both bring the most fabulous benefits to our family’s wellbeing. Garlic has amazing health properties…lets take a look.

The best ways to prepare garlic
Well it is certainly very clear that garlic has a multitude of reported health benefit,s but how do you prepare to eat yours?
Raw garlic contains a component called Allicin, which helps in thinning the blood and it is this that lowers cholesterol. I don’t actually like the thought eating raw garlic though do you? Many people taking garlic capsules along with their vitamin pills. Do you do this?
I use a garlic press most of them time.
A garlic crusher is an invaluable kitchen item and Oliver’s Kitchen’s garlic press is a wonderful solution. It has a large chamber allows you to crush more than one clove at a time, effortlessly. You can even leave the whole skin on without having to get your hands smelly with their garlic presser which is a rather huge bonus in my book.

How we eat our garlic
We have garlic in bolognese and lasagna, we have it on pizza, in risotto and all the Asian and tomato based dishes we prepare. We adore garlic bread. We probably eat it 4 out of every 7 nights. We have even been know to forage for wild garlic and use it in salad or soup – delicious.
So not only are the health benefits of garlic outstanding it is also a flexible and delicious seasoning. I have to say I think it is rather fabulous.
